The Photovoltaic (PV) industry has undergone rapid growth within the past decade, driven by Government incentives and feed-in tariffs to promote consumer acceptance. Generating power from renewable sources will continue to grow over the next 10-20 years as an increasing number of countries set minimum targets for the fraction of energy derived from non-carbon-emitting methods of generating electricity. Solar power is considered to be a leading environmentally friendly means of producing energy.
The manufacturing process for solar cell / module production should be as environmentally friendly as the basic concept of generating energy directly from sunlight itself via the modules produced. Non-contact laser-based systems, used within production-line tools, enable end-users to eliminate traditional approaches such as etching and screen-printing, which can result in toxic emissions or cause damage to wafers being processed.
The implementation of laser processes within the Solar industry is essential to the roadmaps being pursued by end-users over the next 5-10 years. Laser based manufacturing enables higher efficiency of the cells. Being a non-contact technology, lasers are essential for the use of thinner wafers reducing raw material costs. These benefits are enabling cell manufacturers to decrease $/Watt module costs as part of the drive towards “grid-parity”.
